Stepney Stars Leanne Macbeth

17th June 2021

Welcome to Stepney Stars where we showcase some of our young people who have spent time and Stepney.  I’m delighted to introduce Leanne Macbeth today.  Some of you might know Leanne as she has been a familiar face at Stepney for many years; I’ll let her tell you her story.

I started learning to ride and volunteering at Stepney when I was 8 years old and then started working here when I was 16 teaching and doing pony academy in the holidays. When I left, I went to Kirkley Hall College to study for equestrian qualifications and worked in the equine industry!! If I’m honest, I also did a lot of galloping around on cross country courses on a 15hh cob!!

I came back to Stepney full-time in my 20s where I spend a lovely 6 years teaching and looking after our fabulous horses and ponies and doing my British Hores Society exams before I left for a couples of years. Then, I went south and worked on a show jumping yard for a year where I gained a lot of experience and also did a bit of falling off along the way!!

My biggest supporter in this time has been Ed, my long-suffering boyfriend, who lets me borrow his car to take my horses round the country.

I now work freelance riding, teaching and competing and I’m loving being back to teach you at Stepney.  I’m also really excited about studying for my BHS Stage 5 over the next 12 months, and eventing Roxi, one of my lovely horses (although I fall off her a lot at the moment!)

I think if I had to highlight one thing I learned at Stepney that has helped me most it would be about good horsemanship and that horses can change your life forever!

And, the advice I would give to my ten year old self would be ‘work hard and keep trying to be the best person you can be.  Follow your dreams which are achievable if you work hard enough and want it enough.’

Thank you, Leanne for sharing your story with us.  Just shows that even experienced riders can do some falling off!!

I’m sure you’ll all say hello to Leanne when you come in for your lessons or to join in with our Equestrian and Activity Club evenings.
