Stepney Stars

31st March 2021

Welcome to our next Stepney Stars feature.  This month, we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Luck.  Izzy spent many hours at Stepney, and we were lucky enough to have her Mum, Tracey and her Dad, Steve working here at various times too!  It’s often a family affair at Stepney! I’ll let Izzy tell you her story.

I started riding at Stepney when I was 6 years old and then went on to become a volunteer. I took part in Pony Club, and when I was 13,  I was on the scholarship programme for 2 years where I got training towards my BHS stages and I met some of my closest friends who I still see to this day. Some of my favourite moments from my time at Stepney were competing at the riding schools’ championships in Warwickshire on the lovely Maestro who I believe is still a firm favourite with current volunteers!  (yes he is!)

After I left Stepney I did some competing on a loan horse which was when I discovered my passion for eventing. (eventing is the discipline where the horse and rider compete in dressage, show jumping and cross country and is often described as the ultimate test for the combination.) I decided to leave school at 16 to pursue a career with horses which was when I started my job working for a 5* eventer. My job includes all daily yard tasks like mucking out, turning out, feeding and grooming but it also means I get to ride some very nice horses! I also get to travel all over the country to groom at events which is one of my favourite parts of the job as I love turning out the horses for competitions and it is so rewarding to see all of the work you put into training at home pay off. My proudest moment so far is probably taking a young horse around his first event double clear after he tried to drop me in the warm up!

As for what I am planning to do next, after completing a level 3 apprenticeship in equine management I am going to work towards my British Horse Society Stage 3 qualification, and I would like to get some teaching qualifications as well. I am also currently in the process of buying my own horse to hopefully produce up the levels of eventing which I am very excited about as it has been my dream since I was little to have my own horse!

If I could give my 10 year old self some advice it would be to keep spending every minute you can with the ponies and to never give up on your dreams because I’m definitely living mine! I owe so much to Stepney as without the training, experiences and the wonderful people that I met there, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

That’s a brilliant story of your success, Izzy. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.  We loved having you at Stepney and wish you all the very best for your future studies.  Who knows, we might see you back with us one day!!!

If you know of anyone who has been part of our family at Stepney who would like to share their success story and be one of our Stepney Stars, please let us know as we’d love to feature them here!
