how to volunteer
- Fill in a Registration/ Enquiry Form. You can e-mail, post or deliver this by hand.
- We will contact you to arrange an induction.
- You will need to provide 2 character references as to your suitability to work with children and vulnerable adults. Unfortunately you cannot start work here until we have received these.
- Some volunteers will also have to agree to us undertaking a 'Police Check'. We use this information in addition to your references to ensure that you are suitable.
- As soon as our checks are done we will contact you with a start date.
- Soon after this we will agree a training and support programme with you to ensure we both gain the maximum benefit from your time here.
What to Wear.
- Strong boots, shoes or Wellingtons. Trainers are not suitable and therefore not allowed.
- Hats must be worn for leading or riding and are supplied by the stables.
- Warm or waterproof clothing is advisable.
- We do not allow jewellery including piercing of any sort.
- Long hair will need to be tied back when working with the horses.
How often can I come in?
This will be agreed with you at your Induction. Times can vary enormously
and there is no upper or lower limit.
Are there particular times of the day when we need volunteers most?
Yes!!
We always need volunteers but sometimes are busier than others. Evenings and weekends are usually our busiest times but we also run special events and educational days for schools for which we will require extra help.
Do you need to book in to help?
Yes. There is a diary in Reception where you can add your names to the days you are able to attend.
This helps the yard staff know how many volunteers to expect on a particular day. It also helps
identify any gaps that we need to fill.
If you are unable to make it in for any reason we would appreciate a phone call whenever possible.
Are there any rules that apply to volunteers?
- You will be advised of Stables Policies on Health and Safety and Child Protection at your Induction. We expect you to adhere to these at all times.
- All volunteers must sign in/out when working at the Stables.
- No Smoking on the Yard.
- Have fun and enjoy yourself!
If I volunteer will it affect my Welfare Benefits?
Volunteering at the Stables should not affect your benefits. People on Job Seekers Allowance
can do as much voluntary work as they want so long as you actively continue to seek work.
For more information please see leaflet WK4, 'Financial Help if you work or are doing voluntary work', available from the DSS.
